Primitivo, a variety grown in southern Italy, is genetically similar to Zinfandel but has smaller berries. Grown at the Shumahi Vineyard in the warm rolling hills near Glen Ellen in the Sonoma Valley, the fruit ripens well into aromas of berry and black cherry with a hint of white pepper. Berry flavors, gentle tannin, and a long finish make it a great wine with grilled lamb, pork loin, or spicy Italian dishes. Aged for 18 months in tight grain French oak.
